A Functional Approach to Adult ADHD Testing & Treatment
Can You Relate?
What Adult ADHD Actually Feels Like
Some days you feel unstoppable. You’re remarkably productive and can hyperfocus on tasks for hours without a break. Other days, you have zero steam and can’t sit for twenty minutes without being bored out of your mind, even when the boring thing you need to get done is important.
Or, maybe you know what your to-do list says you should be focusing on, but you can’t make yourself start. You circle around a single, dreaded task for an hour. Procrastinating by folding all the laundry in your house (even organizing your junk drawer) so you don’t have to do it.
Perhaps you walk into a room and forget why you’re there. Or you’re chronically late no matter how hard you try not to be, not because you don’t care but because your sense of how long things take never quite matches reality.
Maybe you start five things and finish exactly none of them and are constantly beating yourself up about it.
None of these are character flaws. If you’re reading this and feeling seen, you’ve probably been living these patterns for a long time.
Adult ADHD doesn’t usually show up the way most people picture, the kid who can’t sit still or who drifts off into a daydream in school. In adults, ADHD often looks like exhaustion.
It’s a constant feeling that life requires more effort for you than it does for most people. It may leave you wondering what’s wrong with you and feeling chronically behind or out of sync.
At Grounded Psychiatry, we hear our Adult ADHD clients share experiences like these time and time again. We meet you here and help you find a path forward through holistic ADHD treatment tailored to you as an individual.
Could It Still Be Adult ADHD?
Even if you were a straight A student and did well in school, ADHD isn’t automatically ruled out. This often means you simply found ways to compensate. Usually, those ways came at a cost only you can see.
Many adults with ADHD were bright, high-achieving kids whose intelligence covered for executive function struggles that went largely unnoticed. You may have put in far more effort than it looked like from the outside, lived in a procrastination-cram cycle, and performed best under the pressure of a deadline.
Some hyperfocused on subjects they loved while failing in the ones that didn’t hold their attention, and still others were fueled by perfectionism, fear, or anxiety, driven by a motivation not to disappoint their parents and teachers.
When the structure of the school environment disappears, the coping mechanisms that worked in the beginning of your life may have stopped working all at once, which is why it can often feel even more challenging as an adult with ADHD.
Adult ADHD Testing Is Only Part of the Picture
Why Holistic Treatment for Adult ADHD Matters
We’re not against testing for adult ADHD. An objective evaluation can be a useful piece of the puzzle and is part of how we approach ADHD Testing in Atlanta at Grounded Psychiatry. Holistic treatment for adult ADHD offers a wider perspective and looks at what’s going on beyond a single test score or qualitative metric.
We provide you with a holistic approach beginning with a full evaluation to discuss current challenges and symptoms, your childhood and developmental history. We listen to when your symptoms started and how they show up at work, home, and in your relationships.
We look at your school and work history, sleep, medical history, psychiatric and mental health history, and any medications or substances you’re using. We assess diet, lifestyle, and other conditions that could worsen your symptoms.
Testing isn’t the whole story, though. We don’t stop with a number or a single assessment. Instead, we provide holistic treatment and solutions for ADHD.
Often, Adult ADHD Is Only a Part of the Picture
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition, not a byproduct. Difficulty concentrating, remembering, starting tasks, and staying organized can come from having ADHD, and they can also come from or be worsened by other factors and conditions.
Taking into account your history and symptoms, we’ll show you how anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic stress, or burnout may also be at play. We look at sleep quality, insomnia, nutritional status, thyroid function, hormones, and other medical contributors that are crucial factors in making existing ADHD harder to manage.
We look at you as an individual and help build a holistic treatment plan for ADHD that is specifically tailored to your needs, physiology, and life.
Grounded Psychiatry’s Holistic Approach to ADHD Treatment
Rather than assuming every ADHD brain needs the same intervention, we look at each person individually and ask two questions:
What might you need more of?
What might be getting in the way?
Our approach to holistic ADHD treatment draws on principles from Dr. James Greenblatt’s Plus-Minus® Plan, detailed in his book Finally Focused.
We look at sleep, nutrition, movement, stress, nervous-system regulation, digestive health, and nutritional deficiencies like omega-3s, magnesium, zinc, iron, vitamin D, and other labs when clinically indicated.
We’re fully transparent in that supplements, diet, and lifestyle changes don’t cure ADHD. However, what they can do is reduce the factors amplifying your symptoms, so your brain has an easier time functioning the way you need it to.
We don’t guess; we test, and we never offer a blanket recommendation without the evidence to back it. We build a plan around your actual biology.
Does Treating Adult ADHD Mean Medication?
Not necessarily, but we’re not anti-medication either. Medication can be genuinely life-changing for the right person, and we talk openly about medication options as part of your evaluation, including how Georgia regulations shape what can be prescribed and by whom.
At Grounded Psychiatry, we offer both stimulant and non-stimulant holistic ADHD treatment for adults. If your treatment plan includes a stimulant medication, Georgia law requires regular urine drug screening as part of that monitoring, and stimulant medications (e.g. Adderall and Vyvanse) can only be prescribed to patients located in Georgia at the time of their visit. Our non-stimulant and full holistic approach is available across all of our licensed states.
For many of our clients, holistic ADHD treatment also includes therapy or ADHD coaching, sleep optimization, exercise, nutrition support, external organizational systems, and reducing unnecessary cognitive load through routines and environmental changes.
If anxiety, depression, or trauma are part of the picture, we address those alongside ADHD. When testing turns up a correctable deficiency, we treat that as well.
Some people do very well on medication, others prefer to explore non-medication options first, and some benefit from both. We won’t try to steer you in any one direction; we uncover what actually makes sense for you.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What Is Holistic ADHD Treatment for Adults?
Holistic ADHD treatment looks at the whole person rather than just addressing symptoms alone. At Grounded Psychiatry, that includes ADHD testing when appropriate, along with a full clinical history and factors like sleep, nutrition, stress, and hormones.
We look closely at other conditions that can affect attention and focus, combined with individualized decisions about medication and therapy.
What Else Can Cause Symptoms That Look Like Adult ADHD?
Anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic stress, burnout, poor sleep, thyroid issues, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal changes, and certain medications can all cause or worsen attention and focus problems.
Part of a thorough evaluation is figuring out what’s actually driving your individual symptoms.
Is Holistic ADHD Treatment as Effective as Medication?
Good news! Holistic ADHD treatment and medication aren’t competing options. Holistic ADHD treatment looks at sleep, nutrition, stress, and other contributing factors alongside, not instead of, medication when medication is appropriate. Many people benefit most from a combination of both.
Can I Get Holistic ADHD Treatment at Grounded if I Don’t Live in Atlanta?
Yes. Grounded Psychiatry provides virtual ADHD evaluation and treatment across our licensed states, so you don’t need to live in Atlanta to work with us.
Stimulant medications (e.g. Adderall and Vyvanse) can only be prescribed to patients located in Georgia due to state prescribing requirements.
