Looking for a PMHNP Preceptorship that Actually Prepares You?

Hi, I’m Jessica Kettell! I’m not your average psychiatric nurse practitioner and most certainly not your average preceptor. The struggle to find the right nurse practitioner preceptor is real…

You’ve probably found plenty who will let you shadow them through 15-minute med checks and sign off on your hours. That’s not how I operate. I’m here to teach you what I wish I’d learned in school and how to help people actually get better, not just manage their symptoms.

If that sounds aligned with your philosophy, you’re in the right place!

I’m a board-certified PMHNP and the founder of Grounded Psychiatry, and I've precepted over 130 students. My entire approach is built around functional, nutritional, and integrative psychiatry. We go beyond the pill bottles to the root cause.

I offer ongoing mentorship for your daily clinical practice and help you in the bigger picture to achieve your career goals.

What You’ll Learn in Your Preceptorship

Functional & Integrative Mental Health Care

My education and experience revolve around precise and integrative psychiatry. I'll show you how to bring a root-cause lens to your patients and guide you in the labs, genetics, nutrients, and whole-person thinking your clients are searching for.

The Business of Private Practice

While helping others feel less alone, being your own boss is… well, lonely at times! I’ll share how I’ve built and run my successful practice (including taxes and business). You’ll feel supported with insights and info no one’s talking about.

You probably chose this path because you genuinely want to help people. Me too. So, let’s do just that! I'll show you how to listen deeply, build trust, and deliver exceptional care that gains referrals and changes outcomes and lives.

Deep Listening and Real Client Care

Am I the Right Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Preceptor for You?

You’re in the right place if you’re…

Passionate and excited about a career in psychiatry

Curious about holistic and functional approaches

Dreaming of starting your own practice

Here to serve your patients and see them as people (instead of numbers)

If you want to feel prepared the day you graduate, I invite you to apply for my psychiatric preceptorship.

We likely won’t be a good fit if you’re just looking to check a box and rack up clinical hours with no real interest in holistic psychiatry or functional medicine. There are plenty of preceptors who offer that approach. I'm looking for the students who want more!

I care deeply for my patients and my practice. I'm building Grounded Psychiatry into something bigger and love watching my best students grow into the kind of clinicians I'd be proud to work alongside one day.

When I invest in you, I mean it.

How PMHNP Preceptorship Works

If you're looking for a PMHNP preceptorship, the first step is to fill out a quick interest form We’ll meet and ensure we’re the right fit, and then get your clinical placement secured. Pretty simple, right?

Please do not use AI to complete these application questions; believe us when we say we’ll know if you do ;)). Using AI will disqualify you from the preceptorship. We’re assessing your writing style and personality (not your chatbot’s personality) by reading your work. Thank you for understanding!

Please note: all clinical training hours take place in person at an outpatient mental health clinic in Decatur, Georgia. That clinic is not associated with Grounded Psychiatry.

Before You Apply

Thank you for your interest in training with me! I receive a lot of preceptorship applications, and unfortunately, I can’t take everyone, so I take this application process pretty seriously.

This is your chance to help me get to know you! Take your time with your answers, be thoughtful, specific, and let your personality come through. I’m looking for students who are genuinely excited to learn, communicate well, and are ready to put effort into their clinical experience.

To complete your application: Quick, one-sentence answers don't give me enough to determine whether we’re the right fit, so give me something to work with.

Looking for a Career Coach to Optimize Your Psychiatric Practice

I help established practitioners build a career based on functional, integrative approaches and grow their existing practice. I offer group mentorship where we meet twice monthly via Zoom. I can guide you in opening your practice, refining your work, and figuring out your next career move. Career coaching is fully virtual, so I can support you wherever you’re located!

“I learned more in one day with Jessica than I have in many classes. She is incredibly kind, thoughtful, and genuinely invested in both her patients and the students she teaches. She takes the time to answer every question and explains complex ideas in a way that feels clear and approachable.

What stood out most to me was how deeply she cares about understanding the why behind what someone is experiencing. While medication certainly has its place, she always looks at the whole person and considers the functional and lifestyle factors that may be contributing as well. That perspective completely changed the way I think about patient care.

I have already found myself talking about this experience to others because it was truly one of the most meaningful and valuable learning experiences I’ve had. Jessica is an exceptional clinician and teacher, and I feel very grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from her.”

“Jessica was absolutely phenomenal! I was very blessed to have gotten her as my preceptor. She was referred to me from one of her previous students and that was one of the biggest blessings throughout my Walden Preceptor search. She is a plethora of knowledge and her willingness to teach and share is like no other! I’m so thankful for her and what I was able to gain from her. She is not one to gate keep and that is the true gift. If you’re interested in alternative holistic methods of care in addition to pharmaceutical medicines, this is the preceptor you want to have. Thanks again Jessica! Words cannot truly express my gratitude. I look forward to continuing to learn from you!”

“Jessica is AMAZING! The compassion she has with her patients is unmatched. I’m so grateful for the education, tips, and encouragement she gave me this quarter. I love that she uses functional medicine to create a holistic treatment plan and medications. She’s not pushing pills; she encourages patients to develop lifestyle changes. After completing my education under her preceptorship, I am confident I will be a competent Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I could not have asked for better support and guidance in my graduate program. I know that after every educational encounter, I will learn something new that I can use to help heal my patients. I appreciate her so much for that!

“Thank you so much for a great rotation ! It was such a pleasure to work with you and to learn from you. Your holistic approach to treatment is something that really brought in my understanding of what providers can do to help patients with psychiatric conditions. In school, we only ever learn about prescription medications as treatment modalities so I consider myself fortunate to have had the privilege of observing your clinical cases! I will definitely carry forward all the things that I have learned from you and I can only hope that I will one day be able to become a provider as kind, empathetic, and efficient as you. Thank you so much again for taking the time to teach students given your already packed schedule. I sincerely hope that our paths may cross again in the future or that at least I run into other teachers and mentors as wonderful as you.”

I’ve learned valuable lessons that extend beyond medicine. You were one of the stand out role models among the health practitioners I have encountered throughout medical school. Thank you for being so kind, open-minded, curious and passionate about what you do. Thank you for caring so much. About the patients, about the students, and about every little thing. You really do make a difference with the work you do. The experience with you has been incredible and you’ll always have a special place in my story. A sincere thank you for everything.”

“It was a pleasure working with Jessica over the past two quarters, and I can confidently say that this has been my favorite clinical experience. From the very beginning, she was kind, extremely helpful, and incredibly knowledgeable. She consistently went above and beyond, always taking the time to answer my questions thoroughly and ensuring that I understood each aspect of patient care. What stood out the most was her compassion—not only for her patients but also for me as her student. She created a safe and supportive learning environment where I felt comfortable asking questions and discussing cases. Her willingness to pause and explain concepts demonstrated her dedication to teaching and fostering growth in her students. Jessica was always available whenever I needed guidance or faced challenges during the clinical process.
